Data Share: China's Imported Wood Volume Reached 65.551 Million Cubic Meters in 2025, Down 11.5% Year-on-Year


In 2025, China's total wood imports (measured in log volume equivalent) reached 65.551 million cubic meters, a year-on-year decrease of 11.5%, with an import value of US$11.22 billion, down 13.9% year-on-year. Among these, China's log imports amounted to 31.384 million cubic meters, down 13.1% year-on-year, with an import value of US$4.82 billion, down 21.8% year-on-year. Sawnwood imports reached 24.061 million cubic meters, down 10.0% year-on-year, with an import value of US$6.40 billion, down 6.7% year-on-year.


1. China's Softwood Log Imports in 2025

In 2025, China's softwood log imports reached 23.918 million cubic meters, a year-on-year decrease of 8.4%. The main species included radiata pine, white pine, Douglas fir, Korean pine, and Scots pine. Among these, radiata pine log imports reached 17.671 million cubic meters, up 1.4% year-on-year, accounting for 73.9% of total softwood log imports. Imports of fir and spruce have been declining year by year over the past five years, reaching only 1.785 million cubic meters in 2025, down 44.1% year-on-year.

In 2025, China's main sources of softwood log imports included New Zealand, Japan, and Canada. Softwood log imports from New Zealand accounted for 75.7% of total softwood log imports. Imports from the United States decreased by 89.3% year-on-year, while imports from Germany and Poland each fell by 62%.

2. China's Softwood Sawnwood Imports in 2025

In 2025, China's softwood sawnwood imports reached 14.584 million cubic meters, a year-on-year decrease of 12.3%. The main species included fir and spruce, hemlock-fir, spruce-pine-fir (SPF), as well as Korean pine and Scots pine. The combined import volume of fir and spruce, hemlock-fir, and SPF decreased by 9.1% year-on-year, while imports of Korean pine and Scots pine decreased by 12.8% year-on-year.

In 2024, China's main sources of softwood sawnwood imports included Russia, Canada, Belarus, and Finland. Softwood sawnwood imports from Russia accounted for 69.6% of total softwood sawnwood imports.

3. China's Broadleaved Log Imports in 2025

In 2025, China's broadleaved log imports reached 7.466 million cubic meters, a year-on-year decrease of 25.2%. The main species included birch, oak, eucalyptus, beech, and poplar. Birch logs were mainly imported from Russia and Latvia; oak logs were mainly imported from France, Germany, the United States, and Slovakia; eucalyptus logs were mainly imported from Brazil, Solomon Islands, and New Zealand.

In 2025, China's main sources of broadleaved log imports included Papua New Guinea, Russia, and the Solomon Islands, accounting for 21.4%, 16.5%, and 14.6% of total broadleaved log imports, respectively. Broadleaved log imports from the United States decreased by 71.7% year-on-year.

4. China's Broadleaved Sawnwood Imports in 2025

In 2025, China's broadleaved sawnwood imports reached 9.477 million cubic meters, a year-on-year decrease of 6.2%. Among imported broadleaved sawnwood, rubberwood accounted for a relatively large proportion, with an estimated import volume of around 4 million cubic meters. Other main species included oak, beech, ash, and North American hardwoods. Oak sawnwood was mainly imported from the United States and Russia; beech sawnwood was mainly imported from Romania, Germany, and Serbia; ash sawnwood was mainly imported from Vietnam, Russia, and the United States.

In 2025, China's main sources of broadleaved sawnwood imports included Thailand, Russia, the United States, the Philippines, Gabon, and Vietnam. Broadleaved sawnwood imports from Thailand accounted for 44.5% of total broadleaved sawnwood imports. Imports from Papua New Guinea and Vietnam increased by 221.2% and 139.8% year-on-year, respectively.
